California In Three Pieces

We spent a disjointed (approximately) three weeks in SoCal. Because of our two trips to Arizona, it was split into three different parts.  The first week started with a few days of rain and cool temps. After our trip to Tucson, things started warming up. Then we were off to Phoenix, returning to unusually cool weather for mid-April.

This is the rain/hail on our patio in the first few days of our stay.
Most of our pictures show us wearing many layers of cycling clothing.

Despite the hail, we did squeeze in four rides before we packed up everything in sight and drove east to Arizona. There was time to sneak in a ride with Britt and Kevin.

In our second SoCal stint, we did a ride every day because we knew we’d be off the bike for five days while in Phoenix and Joshua Tree. We had a short visit with Dennis and Kathy on the trail, and then had a longer visit during a three-tandem ride at week’s end.

It wasn’t warm, but at least it was sunny!
Accidental visit with Dennis and Kathy on a cool and blustery day.

In our final days on the west coast we didn’t see all that much of the sun, and it was missed! I don’t like to complain and I have been known to tell people to “stop whining”, but it was pretty cold and I looked forward to a return home (to some warmth).

A rare appearance by the sun at the end of the day.
No sun, but we did see the AMTRAK Surfliner on the Walnut Trail.

We had a chilly ride with Britt and Kevin, where I wished I was wearing wool socks. We kept expecting it to get nice, because it is always sunny in Irvine. It was not to be!

We had a day off the bike to explore the neighborhood and the magnificent rose garden on Poppy Avenue!

Our final ride of the trip had another unplanned meeting with our tandem pals.

We are back home, and the next 3 weeks will find us elbow deep in completing all of our Georgia Tandem Rally prep and tasks to try to make our very last rally a wonderful event. I’ll check back in with you later in May!
