It’s Getting Hot in Here

The fun factor always increases significantly when Mitzi and John arrive!  It’s a busy week with six rides, lots of food and visits with Tucson tandem celebrities.

The temperature has also increased significantly each day with temps approaching 90 by the end of each ride.

Enjoying our first ride with Mitzi and John!
Rest, refuel, refill water bottles. REPEAT!
Every evening, about a minute before sunset, the mountains across from our house turn red and light up.

Let’s review: we have been spending spring training time in Tucson since 2022. The weather is great, the riding features a 52-mile dedicated (recreational) loop around the city, there are lots of tandem riders here and it’s a certified City of Gastronomy. For us, there is a lot to love!

The tandem javelina, decked out for St. Patrick’s Day, has moved to a new location.
All of our guests this year enjoyed a GREAT meal at the Guadalajara Grill!

Fueled by our fantastic dinner the night before, we set out for Oro Valley, where the streets are paved in Gold!

The desert is in bloom!
Captains wait while we photograph the colorful cacti!
We have cool weather on our off day. It’s the only day of the 28 days that we needed a jacket!

Our off bike activities featured an incredible brunch, a visit to the Mirror Lab at the University of Arizona, and a trip to the Loop Store (at the Southern Arizona Heritage and Visitor Center).

The Baja Cafe lived up to its’ reputation with enough delectable food for lunch for two days!

We saw where they would be making giant mirrors (for giant telescopes) if they were not in some sort of hiatus period. It was an interesting tour, but it was disappointing because once we reached the lab, there was nothing to see! The only mirrors were in the short film we saw before the tour began.

Stunning crested saguaro cactus outside the visitor center and Pima County Historic Courthouse.
Gorgeous mosaic tiles make this court house stand out. The Dillinger gang was arraigned here in 1934.
We had dinner with Mike and Caren at “Cold Beer and Cheeseburgers” followed by ice cream at Handel’s
We shared this sampler…from top left – buckeye, black cherry, salted caramel and cherry cordial. YUM!

We were able to attend a second Oro Valley tandem club ride. This ride was four tandems on a very pretty part of the loop.

We debuted our new hummingbird jerseys – very bright and colorful.
Lots of Cholla cacti here – it looks soft and you want to hug it…BUT DON’T!
Four couples on a hot 39-mile ride!
Some cool loop art that we rode through.
We managed two tandems on our rack for the first time.
John lobbied for Culver’s on the way home from lunch and it wasn’t a hard sell!

On our last ride with Mitzi and John we visited a favorite cycling stop, the Estrella Bakery. We first visited it when we were riding across the country in 2017 and were excited to rediscover it when we started visiting Tucson 5 years ago.

They are getting ready for Easter at the bakery. It’s hard to choose a treat.
We picked an apple turnover and a saguaro cactus cookie!
We visited with front yard Buddha after our final ride, and before Mitzi and John packed up their bike.

It was a fabulous week with friends, but we have another week of cycling and a few special visitors coming up in our next installment!
