Coast 2 Coast Day 12: The Wild, Wild West

When we last left you, we were in Tombstone, but had yet to visit the historic town.  On our way to Bisbee, we ride our tandem on the very streets that Wyatt Earp used to ride his horse.

Evidently, garbage day is still on Wednesdays, just like it was in 1888.

After a long climb, we reach the highest point of our trip, which also happens to be the continental divide.

Because St. Augustine is at sea level, it’s all downhill from here!

Well, it’s all downhill (almost 30 miles!) for the rest of today at least. We descend to Bisbee, a former copper mining town.  The mines still remain, huge open pits that scar the landscape.

The mines left in 1975, which allowed the town to reinvent itself as an artsy-touristy area.

Paul McCartney was recently spotted in town.  We visit the one and only Bicycle Brothel, which is part bike museum, part bike store.

Tonight, we stay at the historic Gadsen Hotel, built in 1907 in Douglas.  It reminds us of the Windsor Hotel in Americus, GA.

Here are today’s stats:
Start city: Tombstone, AZ
End city: Douglas, AZ
Miles: 51
Total miles to date: 633
Pedaling time: 3 hours, 29 minutes
Avg. speed: 14.6 mph
Feet climbed: 2400
Fatigue factor: 5 (out of 10)
Wind: light and variable
Road condition: 4 out of 5
Temperature extremes: 60 at ride start, 86 at ride finish

It’s our last night in John McCain’s home state. We are still waiting for the senator to call.

Tomorrow:  Good morning New Mexico!

  1. Apropos of … I dunno:

    Across the great divide,
Just grab your hat, and take that ride
    Get yourself a bride,
And bring your children down to the river side.

  2. Awesome tandem team,
    but we already knew that!

    adventure continues.

  3. A real hotel! Whoo hoo! Enjoy. I’ve been wondering, how sore are you at the end of the day? Or getting up in the morning? I know you guys are in shape, but that’s a lot of time in the saddle! (See what I did there?) Loving the blogs, keep on rolling

  4. Enjoying your pictures and captions! I completed this C2C tour in 2013 and 2014. Bubba’s bicycle tour provides a great way to cross the the southern tier of the United States. Enjoy the rest of the tour!
