90 Years and 175 Miles

We are not usually in Southern California in mid-July but a very special occasion brought us west for a week. We celebrated my father-in-law’s 90th birthday with a big bash on a yacht and also managed to squeeze in 5 rides on the tandem.

42 people on a dinner cruise aboard the Icon in Newport Harbor made for a special night.

Party Boat!
All guests had their photos made on the boarding deck.

Here is what we looked like at the end of a very fun night!

We had lovely, cool weather for riding our bike as well. We debuted our “donut jerseys”, a special edition jersey that Voler made to celebrate National Donut Day back in June. I think they are actually sprinkles jerseys – which makes me even happier!

It turns out that July 12 is National French Fry day…and who are we to NOT celebrate that after a ride?

Excellent club and fries at Cappy’s.

Seal Beach is always a favorite destination, but the Simple Green Dinosaur, Egbar (life sized, I’m sure) was a very special treat for us! I snapped him as we rode by.

Almost at Seal Beach on the Pacific Coast Highway.

We also found the time to squeeze in a ride with Britt and Kevin. We checked out a new lunch spot (Juliette’s) with some of the best blueberry pancakes we have ever eaten! There was enough for everyone to have a taste.

It was a short, fun visit. We started the trip with a visit to a Tiki Bar in Laguna (The Royal Hawaiian) with Elliott and Skye, and ended the trip with a Tiki Bar right across from our hotel in Newport Beach (Billy’s). Those Tiki drinks pack quite the punch!

Cocktails with two of our favorite people.

We are just a few weeks away from our next adventure – the summer car trip. We’ll be checking in from somewhere in middle America with the details.

There was also awesome ice cream (and mine had sprinkles)

  1. Let’s all hope we look like Roger’s dad at 90,right? We are currently in SoCal. So a ride that the so cal tandem club did that was credited to Roger’s magic of creating a ride! Unfortunately, it did not fit with our schedule, but we have had two wonderful rides. No ice cream though, what’s wrong with that? Best of luck with your middle of the states rides…Ken and Rhonda

  2. A fantastic celebration and cycling, too! Glad to hear all went well for your trip. Sorry we missed you this time, but will hope to ride with you on your next trip out west.
