Tandems In The Mist

When we last checked in with you we had just finished an epic road trip. After two weeks of relaxing and reconnecting at home, we flew to the west coast and got into our SoCal lifestyle which consists of five bike rides per week.

Our “California” Erickson on campus at UCI. That’s their mascot ZOT (he’s an anteater).

The trip started with a birthday celebration 🥳. Roger had birthday donuts, a delectable birthday dinner at The Side Door, and a delivery of birthday cookies from the Cookie Lab.

The incomparable Prime Rib Sandwich – our fave.
Thanks to Mitzi and John for having these cookies delivered for Roger’s birthday.

Next we celebrated the New Year at home, and then met Madelyn at the Katella Bakery and restaurant.

There were a few impressive sunsets, but for the most part we spent the first few weeks of our stay socked in with mist in the morning and then again in the evening.

Rare rooftop display of color.

We attended the Huntington Beach air show, but the insistent, persistent and consistent mist made it almost impossible to see anything as air shows are not audio-only events. Needless to say we were quite disappointed.

This (extremely zoomed in) photo shows the only visible plane in the air show.

A highlight of the day was crossing over the 4000-mile mark in our drive for five (thousand) – it’s certainly not the Thunderbirds, but it’s something.

Yay us! You can see that mist over the ocean behind us.
Is this stuff ever going away?

Judy visited and we got to celebrate her birthday month with dinner out and more cookies!

Lovely sunset walk with Judy.
This trip we celebrated everything with big, beautiful scrumptious cookies!

We were lucky to catch Deke Dickerson performing at Campus Jack’s. We usually see him in his rockabilly mode, but in this show we were treated to Venturesmania and a night of surf music.

That’s Deke on the far left. Check out the authentic Mosrite guitars and Fender Showman amps.

I would be remiss if I didn’t include that we have ridden with Britt and Kevin every week of our stay thus far. We also were treated to an unexpected visit on the San Diego trail with Dennis and Kathy.

Going in opposite directions, but we had a quick visit with Dennis and Kathy.

Next up John and Mitzi pack up their tandem and bring it west to join us for lots of miles and smiles. All of our fun times will be featured in the next installment of Tandempalooza!

  1. Fantastic pictures and prose – the level that we have come to expect. Tandem rides are always better when you two are along. Thanks.
