Bring Out Your Tandems!

People from all over the country dusted off their tandems to celebrate National Tandem Day on May 3. Rides were held throughout the US and the largest was in Orange County, CA. We were the ride leaders. We didn’t organize the event or this ride, but since Roger made the route, we became the bike to follow on the road.

This was the “first annual” celebration. It was conceived with the idea to bring some attention to tandem cycling. I’m not exactly sure how this event can bring new people to the niche sport – but we never pass up the opportunity to celebrate anything – so here we are!

Almost 30 couples showed up for the ride!

It was a cool and cloudy morning but the weather did not put a damper on our good spirits. We took off from Bill Barber Park in Irvine a little after 9am. It was a 39-mile ride with several stops.

More than 60% of the miles were on the pristine bike paths of Irvine. We separated into a few groups within the first five miles or so.

Our group of about a dozen bikes posed with the UC Irvine mascot, ZOT!

The riding was great, but the featured stop at the Chaupain Bakery (at mile 25) was the pièce de résistance.

We chose the creamy, flakey mixed berry bateau. A work of art on a plate?
Gloria snapped this photo of us enjoying our treat.
Here is my new friend Gloria (4th from left) and her crew enjoying a snack! In the background, you see many tandem riders.

After the ride many of us gathered at the Hangar 24 brewery. There was food and beer and I was probably too tired to take any pictures of the after-ride festivities. We appreciate the efforts of organizer, Susan Gans and everyone who came from near and far to make this ride a success (and certainly the envy of the entire tandem community)!

We’ve got some fun adventures coming up – stay tuned to follow the fun!

  1. Would love to have the route in my bucket list. We visit So. CA often as our son lives in San Marcos. Looks fun.

    1. Hi Rhonda, if you’re not already a member of SoCal Tandem Riders, look us up on Facebook (just type the name in the search bar) and click on “join” – just be sure to answer the 3 membership questions and agree to the (very standard) Group Rules! Then plan to be in San Marcos next May for the 2nd Annual National Tandem Bicycle Ride!

  2. Great route–thanks to Roger! Even as a local, we saw places with new eyes and enjoyed the time with other tandem enthusiasts. Jacaranda trees in bloom, awesome downhill view of Catalina, and delicious treats.
