Not Exactly What We Had in Mind

In our last episode, the Georgia Tandem Rally had concluded and we were back home for just a few days before embarking on our next big adventure. I left out a tiny detail, which soon became a pretty big problem. I don’t want to dwell on it, but I caught a cold during GTR and developed a cough. The cough caused me to throw out my lower back. In an effort to fix things, I saw my chiropractor twice before we left and I thought I was improving. Then we got in the car and started our journey north. The combination of the adjustments and the hours sitting in the car caused my low back and glutes to seize up and suddenly I could barely walk. Three days of about 300 miles a day got us to western New York for a Memorial Day weekend of celebrations for my dear friend Beverly’s youngest son’s wedding.

We had plans to ride our bike while in the Oneonta, NY area and we had plans to ride several times on our way farther north and east as we made our way to Prince Edward Island (PEI) in Canada for a 10-day cycling tour with “Adventures In Tandem” (AIT). Instead of enjoying time on the bike, we visited two urgent care facilities, one chiropractor (where I had to go through the whole new patient routine) twice, and I saw two massage therapists. I’m happy to report that the massages, the adjustments and my aggressive stretching routine is working and I’m doing much better. So our six planned rides before the tour turned into one 13-mile ride along the Kennebec River in Augusta (the capitol city), Maine.

It was such a nice day. Then, much to our dismay, the weather took a serious turn and balmy June turned into Atlanta winter weather. A front blew through, dropping the temperatures 40 degrees in a matter of hours. Wait…it’s almost summer and most of our winter cycling gear/warm clothing has been left at home. Solution: on my birthday (June 3), we went for a shopping spree in Bangor, Maine. The LL Bean Outlet Store and Dick’s Sporting Goods helped us stock up on the extra layers that we needed.

Coming up: we didn’t ride much, but that didn’t keep us from eating out. A food tour in our next post…spoiler alert: there are lobsters involved.

  1. When life throws you lemons…. Wishing you a happy belated birthday and good to hear you made the best of it and ‘enjoyed some lemonade’ with your wonderful looking Lobster Rolls while being toasty-warm in your new layers. 🙂

  2. So sorry to hear about your dominoing health issues, but am glad to hear you are on the mend. At least you got to visit and see some beautiful countryside. Sending best wishes for a complete recovery.

  3. If you can eat LOBSTER, life is good🦞…And anytime you get to shop for new clothes that’s a plus. Have fun and enjoy the cool weather, summer heat and humidity has finally arrived in Tallahassee 🥵

  4. Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Glad you were able to make the best of a bad situation. Wishing you a full and speedy recovery to 100%.
