One Blog Post, Thousands of Calories

Phil from Punxsutawney, PA writes, “Dear Tandempalooza, we need more food and dessert pictures in your blog posts!” We hear you, Phil and since we are experiencing what feels like six more weeks of winter on our trip to Canada, we thought a food blog might be in order. Let’s take a look at what we found while foraging for food from Atlanta to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, which is around 1750 miles.

Eve’s back is having its good and bad moments, but her tummy is very happy. Let’s start off in Abington, VA with the ahi tuna and shrimp salad from Rain Restaurant.

One of our favorite places to eat is in Hagerstown, MD. We often go out of our way to eat German food and drink German beer at Schmankerl Stube. If you can spell it, you can eat there. We split the pork shank, which you must order at least a day in advance.

That’s a big hunk of pig. There was so much to eat that we took the leftovers and made sandwiches to eat in the car the next day!

Our next stop is Oneonta, NY, where we split an eggplant parmigiana with homemade pasta at Toscana Grill. It was a another huge portion.

Also in Oneonta, we came across the Social Eats Cafe, where the hipsters go for brunch. We enjoyed the avocado toast (with lox!) and the breakfast burrito, but thought the matcha tasted like wet grass.

Up the coast we go to Portland, Maine, the lobster capital of the world. When in Maine, eat lobstah rolls at the High Roller Lobster Company.

You can have the traditional roll, or go crazy and get it in a cheesy taco shell. It’s wicked good.

Add fries and dipping sauce for a balanced, healthy meal. Isn’t catsup a vegetable?

Before we leave the country, one more treat, the house-made ramen noodles at State Lunch, in Augusta, the capital city of Maine.

That’s tofu on the left and pork belly on the right. We always think of ramen as salty and cheap. This meal was neither.

Now the fun starts. Want to celebrate Eve’s birthday? You will have to cross the border into Canada to do that. We are at Billy’s Seafood in St. John, New Brunswick. This is mussels country.

And how much seafood can they get into a bowl of seafood gumbo? Apparently, scallops, shrimp, salmon, lobster and mussels are just the start.

It was pouring rain and 41 degrees, but we popped into a beer bar for dessert. And we didn’t order beer…we needed something to warm us up.

A shot of Kahlua and an Irish cream martini should do the trick.

There was cake too: a Guinness stout cake with caramel sauce finishes off the birthday.

Next up: the bike trip begins on Prince Edward Island. Spoiler alert…the weather is not very good.

  1. Wow! I think I gained a few pounds just reading about all that food! The Guinness chocolate cake looked especially good to me. Where are the rest of the dessert pictures that Phil asked for?

  2. What a beautiful array of delicious food! Helps soften the blow of poor weather. Hope you get some clear days to cycle!
