Take The Long Way Home

When we last left our intrepid travelers, we were wrapping up our tour of Prince Edward Island. There we were, only 1700 miles in the minivan and we are home. Some people we hang out with would do that drive in three days. We are going to take about a week.

They actually let us back into the country! First stop: Bangor, Maine, where we went on a warm clothing shopping spree two weeks ago. We were not surprised to find rain and cool temperatures, but now we have the right clothes. We were surprised to find this guy, right across the street from our hotel.

Depending on who you talk to, Paul Bunyan (a fictional character) was born either in Bangor or Bemidji, Minnesota. Take that, Bemidji…this guy is 34-feet tall!

The last lobster rolls of the trip in Saco, Maine.

The next day, we find ourselves three hundred miles to the south in Warwick, Rhode Island.

Believe it or not, we have never rode the roads of Rhode Island. (See what I did there?) Now we can check that state off our list, bringing our lifetime total to 36 out of the lower 48.

“Sunday Dinner” in Warwick featuring chicken, sausage and a giant meatball.

After a miserable drive with rain and traffic, we find ourselves in Allentown, PA, singing Billy Joel songs. They really closed all of the steel factories down.

It looks post-apocalyptic at Bethlehem Steel, which closed over 20 years ago, but they made the best of a bad situation by turning it into a park with an amphitheater and offices. You can still walk through the factory on a raised path and learn all about steel making in case you need a new hobby.

When we picked up our new Kia EV6 in Morgantown, WV last December, we noticed that they have three bike trails that meet near downtown. That’s our next destination. Who knew we would be back so soon?

We ride two days in Morgantown, hitting all three trails. One ride turns out to be 51 miles, the longest ride we have done in 4 years. It was a nice day and we kept riding to get two pictures of West Virginia’s favorite product, coal-fired power! Senator Joe Manchin would be proud.

Pretzels, beer and a big quesadilla at Morgantown Brewing Co.

“Dutch Baby” pancake for breakfast in Morgantown.

We are supposed to do an off-road ride in Pulaski, VA, but it is pouring rain there and the trail would have been a mess. Instead, we call an audible and drive to Abington, VA, where we spent the first night of this trip four weeks ago.

At the Virginia/West Virginia border. Free peanuts!

Our first and last nights are in the same place, making an alpha-omega end to what is our longest road trip ever. We wind up driving almost 4000 miles in our sporty Toyota Sienna, getting 23.8 mpg for the trip.

No free peanuts at the Georgia/Tennessee border.

Before we go, a quick trip to the mailbag…Dr. Marcus Welby from Hollywood writes: “Dr. Kiley and I would like to know how Eve’s back is holding up.” Well, Dr. Welby, although things are improving, Eve did go to her orthopedic guy for some good drugs. We hope to see some healing progress soon. Thanks for taking time out of your busy schedule to write.

We’ll be parking the minivan for our next trip and dusting off our coupled bike for a trip to Calgary and the Canadian Rockies, if the always-polite Canadians will let us return. That’s coming up in August, so stay tuned.

  1. :):) We used to be the “production” travelers-at one time. Food and fun. We loved Maine food and they don’t mess around with providing good clothes. Y’all had a very good trip. Now as far as getting back into Canada……methinks there is a story and maybe some shenanigans?! 😉

  2. Beginners!! Our road trip was over 12,000 miles. But you are obviously trainable, so I’m sure you will do better in future.
Have fun in the Rockies. Wish we were joining you. Tom & Sue
