Here Comes The Sun

We wake up on day 6 of riding with the same exact weather – it’s gray and cold! The plan is to ride 35 miles from Dalvay By the Sea to our next destination, Montague.

Most everyone is in jackets and tights and ready to go!

During the latter part of the ride, a miracle happens and we begin to see our shadows! We finish at the big mussel and pose for pictures to celebrate the return of the sun.

Blue skies mix with the clouds.
Featuring 5 of the nine couples on our trip (and their shadows)!

Our Montague inn is in a picturesque spot.

Pretty view behind our hotel.

Our lunch ends with a favorite Canadian confection: this chocolate, creme, coconut cookie treat called a Nanaimo bar.

Day seven recap: sunny with lots of smiles! Today we ride with just a few layers, enjoying our 33 miles on the bike and visit a lighthouse looking out on the Gulf of St. Lawrence.

After lunch, we visit a Canadian mainstay – Tim Hortons.

I must show you this amazing, and perfectly prepared maple salmon (with more PEI potatoes).
And you do NOT have to be southern to make an excellent bread pudding!

Our final day on the bike is a ride from Montague back to Charlottetown. It’s warm – not even arm warmers are needed.

We spend the day with Ross and Victoria in the Canadian countryside.
Lots of potato fields await their spuds!

Finally we hit our end city, and then ride on the (now dry) Confederation trail one last time on the way to the airport and long term parking, where we reunite with our cars! We rode eight days in a row, averaging 31 miles a ride. Not bad for a girl with a bum back!

I have pictures of everyone we rode with (some rode the long options or were too fast to snap a shot of). Clockwise from top left we have Tom and Sue, Kevin and Valerie, Mark and Karen, Ross and Victoria.

Mike had two different stokers – daughter Julia and Caren.

We didn’t ride with Roy and Ann, but we dressed like them on the last day!

We stayed in four historic, impressive and quirky hotels during our tour. Clockwise from top left, our first and last hotel was the Fairholm, the (haunted?) Lighthouse Inn at West Point, Dalvay By the Sea (also haunted!) and The Riverhouse Inn. The Riverhouse doesn’t have a lot of character, but it had something the others did not: an elevator.

This is a shot of our entire group. Thanks to AIT for taking and providing this photo for everyone.

Yes, the riding conditions were a challenge, but the people, the food, the organization and logistics that went into this tour were impeccable. Thanks to our hosts for their constant good cheer and optimism even in the face of constant “bad” weather forecasts!

Caren, Mike and Julia Bianco made it all fun! Julia was a special (working) guest and charming addition, flying all the way from Los Angeles to join us.
Thanks AIT for supporting us throughout the trip.

In our next post, we leave Canada, but this trip is far from over.

  1. Thanks guys. We are now on the second tour and after a couple of days of – let’s say, suboptimal weather – the sun has returned. It was a lot of fun having you both on the tour and we look forward to seeing you in Calgary in August.
